Insights from Kim Smouter, Executive Director of European Network Against Racism.
With 18+ years of accumulated experience working in Brussels, Kim was appointed March 2022 to lead ENAR with a mandate to guide its institutional development and operations. He is in charge of organisational, financial, and administrative management of ENAR and its Foundation, supervising a talented team of experts. He has successfully worked in the European Parliament, a British regional office, and headed up the Brussels secretariat of a European civil society network covering most of the EU. Kim was also named a 2024-2025 Obama Europe Leader, in 2023 to the list of the Most Influential People of African Descent, and in 2021 to the Remesh Research and Equitable Leadership List.
The European Network Against Racism is the only pan-European network combining racial equality advocacy with forming a strong anti-racist network across Europe. The organisation was set up in 1998 by grassroots activists on a mission to achieve legal changes at European level and make decisive progress towards racial equality in all EU Member States. Since then, ENAR has grown and achieved a great deal.
Remember: Europe has banned racism since 20 years ago. Nevertheless, racism is still alive in a polarised world. This spring at Fair Barcelona - Beginnings Matter, Kim's keynote was a powerful moment dedicated to creating systems that include that also take into account social capital elements and gaps. Racialises communities tend to be under-invested.
